Woosh-Waish

Alright...Up and at 'em here we go.

  • Write From Anywhere
We've been seeing alot of online applications these days, and this is one of the cooler ones. It's an online word processor that can be accessed from anywhere you can find an internet connection. It has a the mass majority of features that you would regularly find as well as some other neat things, such as, posting directly to a blog, exporting to text-compatible file formats and, best of all, the ability to have many people work on it at once. It's neat and although lacking a few simple features it is something you should really check out.

  • Drag and Type - It's As Easy As That
Protopage, using the Ruby-On-Rails framework is really quite cool. Another online application, this makes the website design process a piece of cake (not literally, although I wish it was). It'll take you maybe 15 seconds to learn and it's a whole lot of fun (if your into that kind of thing), and the best part is it's free! My simple page took maybe five minutes to set up. Fool around with it and let me know if you come up with anything neat (post in the comments section).

  • Google and Microsoft...Programs
Here are a couple of great programs from Microsoft and Google. From Google we have Google Desktop. After an indexing of your computer (which can take awhile depending on how many files you have) you can easily find anything on your computer about as fast as a Google websearch is. It also has built in weather, Gmail support, Google Talk support as well as a whole load of plugins that can do many things from a stop-watch to controlling iTunes. From Microsoft we have Microsoft PowerToys (Windows XP Only), although not officially supported by Microsoft they are developed by the Microsoft team, there are about ten of them there and they have many neat functions. The few that I have are the Alt-Tab enfancement, Taskbar Magnifier, Desktop Manager and Image Resizing. Check out the site, some of these are really worth the download (which only takes a few seconds normally)

  • Videos
As a follow up to the Yo-Yo video that I posted last week, in which that guy was the third place world champion, here is a full index of the '05 championship. I definately recommend checking out Shinji Saito under 2A who scored a PERFECT 100!
Then there is this questionable basketball video. Some of the shots look unrealistic but they've done a good enough job hiding it if they are fake. Interesting and some-what entertaining watch non-the-less.
Ok, not a video but a audio clip that shows that some people really can love their computers too much, especially Mac's, enter the I Love My Mac song.
If you still have doubts about whether to chose Internet Explorer or Firefox, please, listen to the people!

  • Random Things You Should Know About
These are just a few things I believe you should check out:
This is an interesting population chart that shows the number of people in proportion to their countries size by building the counties shape out of small blocks representing every one million people.
Hey Crackhead is a humourous but honest letter from a vandalization victim to the crackheads who did the vandalization. Very entertaining read.
To show that the RIAA (if you don't know who they are you are just so out of the loop it isn't even funny...Google it) really are the bad guys Princeton students are selling shirts to pay for their friends fine that he recieved when getting busted.
The Best of 2005 as released by BuisnessWeek. I found this article/articles quite interesting. Especially some of the ideas that got featured.
Stretchable Silicon...Not to much to say about it, other then that this could really be revoloutionary in alot of fields, check it out.

  • New Cells
This story tells of these sub-human cells have been around for awhile but show the interesting origin and usages of the Helacyton Gartleri cells. Definately worth a read although some of the stuff mentioned (namely the origin) is kinda gross, that is if your grossed out by tumors and death...yeah, fun stuff...It's neat though.

  • Wallpapers, Wallpapers, Wallpapers
This site has wallpapers for almost any occasion, event, or/and person. As a bonus, they're good! From Snowy Days to Sunsets and the City, it has alot of landscape backrounds as well as abstract and wallpapers that would otherwise be proprietary to a certain OS. Deffinately worth a bookmark in my book (yes I know, that was a REALLY bad pun, sorry). It's there for all of your (computer) wallpapering needs!

And so ends another post, expect another post in January, probably not many on account of horrible and ugly finals.

Fajitas and Burritahs

Well, it's been awhile but finally things are starting to slow down with school and such so here's (finally) an update.

Edit: As you may have (hopefully have) noticed I've changed site template and made it so that only one post is on the main page. To access previous posts please refer to the side bar.
  • Help By Doing Nothing
Seriously. Just as the title says, you can help save lives by doing close to nothing. Folding@Home is a medical research program run by Stanford University. It calculates and models tiny molecules that can lead to finding soloutions on such diseases as Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease and Cancer. What do you have to do? Just download the program, install it, choose your settings and let it go. What it does is use all of your spare CPU cycles (So it doesn't slow down performance one bit) and uses those, that way it runs descreetly. What's in it for you? Well, other then the fact that you may lead to the cure to a disease you might have some day if you join Engadgets Folding Team (At which I am ranked in the high 100's for now) and get 2000 points (you get a certain amount of points for each core that you complete) by December 15th you could win a Tokyo Flash Watch. Hope you all join up!

  • Don't Mess With Monks
This is what I consider an AMAZING professional grade video. This 3D video is pretty awesome. Great music, great animation, great humour and so on and so forth. I just had to mention it. Although the main site isn't in english (it's in french) you can still read enough to check out the story board drawings with look cool aswell. You MUST check this out! Make sure you have Quicktime.
  • A New...Mammal?
Well...Uh...This....Is...Uh...Odd? A new mammal was found in the rainforests of Borneo that is shaped like a cat, looks sort of like a squirrel, and has a long tail. This is crazy stuff, it's pretty neat to hear of a new animal coming out of no-where. Unfortuanately it hasn't been seen by the human eye, only by remote cameras. Just read the article to learn more, and don't forget the video on the side of the page too.

  • Video Round-Up
Well...You know you have too much time on your hands when you're the 3rd Place 2005 Yo-Yo Champion. Seriously though, this guy can do some INSANE tricks with a Yo-Yo. It's just crazy. Check it out.
Also, check out this Star Wars Parody. It's been around for awhile, but it's funny none the less.
Matrix Ping Pong. Yes, that's right real life matrix. This hilarious and oh so corny vid is a great watch.
And lastly, if you like free TV shows, or more specifically The Office, then you can check out a free episode on the net here.

  • Football Anyone?
Microsoft Football that is. Some say that it's just a rehash of the "If Cars Evolved Like Computers" article that was written awhile back (Google it if you haven't read it) but it's still funny none the less. I especially like number eight, mostly because it is so true about the OS. Make sure you read the comments too as some of those are great aswell.

  • Firefox 1.5!
Finally a bit more tech news, Firefox 1.5 was realeased not to long if ago and if you don't have it already you MUST get it. It has improvements to pop-up blocking, speed and downloading updates. The much needed feature of being able to move and organize tabs was also added and it is just amazing. Just to let you know that some of your extensions or themes may not work with 1.5 but I still highly suggest the upgrade. If you don't know what extensions are they are basically plug-ins for the browser, of the extensions that I use (and that work with Firefox 1.5) are...
  1. Tabbrowser Preferences: This makes it so that the browser never opens a new window again, unless you want it to.
  2. IE Tab: Needs alot of work as it is still mostly uncompatible with some codecs. For the sites that don't work in Firefox this extension lets you open a tab of IE inside Firefox, that way you don't have to even load that pesky Internet Explorer
  3. Session Saver .2: The best for last. This is amazing and a must have for someone like me. If your the kind of person who always has atleast a dozen tabs open at once then this is for you. Not even making Firefox crash will phase this extension. It remembers all of the tabs and windows that you left open so you can close down Firefox and reopen it with all of the tabs you had last loading up. It is an awesome extension.

Hope that keeps you all satisified and that there'll be another one or two posts this month.

Jump Slice

Alright so here we are, sorry it's taken so long...

  • Apple, Aperature, Super Powered Computers
Well, even though it is old news now (and that is my fault) Apple had another two media events since my last post. Their first is their PhotoPlus event, which I'll touch on in a second, and their second is their Australia music media event. This event led way to Australia finally getting a Music Store in iTunes. Apple's PhotoPlus event at PhotoPlus Expo 2005 showed quite a few amazing things. Engadget has/had live coverage of it here. What was revealed was Aperature. A great program for all of you photographers out there (with Macs). It has all the stuff that you need to edit your pictures before you do any special effects in Photoshop. They also updated Powerbook line (brighter screens, better resoloution, better battery life etc.). And now here is the AWESOME part. Apple released what they call the PowerMac G5 Quad. A dual dual-core Mac. It's got two dual-core chips, each running at2.5 GHz. I've heard that the power behind this thing is just AMAZING and I can see why. It can also support up to 4 30" Cinema Displays! Check out the official site here.

  • Its A-Mia Mario!
Ever wanted to create your own Mario game? Well now you can! Sort of. From the folks at Fu-So-Yas Niche is the Super Mario game from the SNES. I haven't tried it out yet, due to time constaints but from the screenshots available on the site it looks really really cool. Check it out and build your own mario levels today! Speaking of old Nintendo games, these guys decided they'd sing about it (Definately a must listen) and the folks at Rubikcubism decided they'd design some cool stuff for you. They built all of the objects shown there completely out of Rubiks cubes. Sweet.

  • Check Out The World, Or Even The Moon...
This is a free downloadable program from NASA that lets you utilise Sattelites to watch real time images of the earth and the moon. You can view climate maps, real sattelite imagery, and maps. Honestly, I love to play around with it. You can zoom in and out between elevations and rotate and turn and look over the place your looking at. You can download it from here. I suggest you check it out. Even just for the neatness factor.

  • Oh...Whoa
Well you know that you've got to much time on your hands when you create a site that puts anybody who visits it into a Jerry Springer show. Yes, the results are interesting and well, peculiar to say the least. Check it out for a possibly humourous experiance...possibly not. Pay attention to whose names you put in because that can lead to erm, intimate experiance with them in the "show". Just a suggestion, when asked for a weapon and a piece of furniture, put in Katana and Thousand-Pound Couch.

  • Randomly Odd
Okay, here is just a round-up of tonnes of stuff I've found.
Don't honk at sleeping grandmas, they might ruin your car.
Online films are fun. I guarantee it.
Don't mess with squirrels. They'll get yah.
Wake up to Captain Morgans. Maybe.
Why do people not know the difference between their head and a jack in the box? Computer Stupidities.
Dislike that spam you get? Here are a few comical drawings (As depicted to the right).

  • Overheard Something?
This site here tells quotes that people have actually said in the city of New York. It's got some great stuff. Just pulling one directly off the site here we have: "Punk guy: You know somethin'? I could have been home right now, watching Gremlins!" Check out the site to see what other stuff is there. Just to warn you alot of the stuff is pretty inappropriate...

  • Carving On The Carver
From a link that my friend gave me is the Carver. It's a car that so called "Can be steered like a car but manuvers like a motorcycle." It looks interesting although I'm beginning to wonder what the limit is on all of these different types of vehicles, especially ones that will never come to the consumer market like this one. Ah well, it's always nice to see new ideas.

  • Intelligent Design
I'm sure you've heard of intelligent design and how bush advocates it for schools right? If you haven't then Google it and you'll find it. Now this guys blog post tells you the only way and humorous way at that to combat off this idealism. Read it, you must!

Lastly I want to give a big shout-out to a Mac Addict at A MacAddict's Page who plugged me in his latest post. I read his latest post everyday. It pays to comment!

Simply Splashing

Alright, it's another week so we have another blog post...Some great & awesome stuff here so read on...

  • Draw...Anything
Well this is cool... especially for you artist types out there. It's a new brush from the brilliant minds of MIT. It is a brush that picks up colors from everywhere you specifically point it at. You can then draw/paint an image onto a touchscreen canvas. Best of all? It can pick up movements like eyes blinking and movement over multiple colors. Check out a online video here.

  • Another...Apple....Event!
Well for those of you that don't remember Apple had a music event about a month ago on Sept. 7. Well they had yet another one this last Wednesday. Some crazy stuff happened, a Video iPod, with the power to play video; a new iMac, with built in iSight(Webcam) and a slimmer design; and lastly iTunes 6, even though we were only at 5.0.2 they bumped it up so that it has a Video tab and we now can download such shows as Lost and Desperate Housewives as well as tons of music videos and a few Pixar shorts. This is some crazy stuff coming out of Apple...whats even more crazy? ANOTHER media event that's planned for the 19th...whoa. Check out a video feed of last weeks event here. For even more indepth info on the good and bad of the event check stuff out here.

  • Rock Out
This is a shweet guitar. It hooks right into you computer via Firewire and then you can play and it records, overall it's a pretty sweet setup that prevents you having to hook up to another third-party product. I'd definately get this, IF I knew it's price...and then I still wouldn't be able to because it would be WAY out of my price-range...I'll keep dreaming.

  • Pranking Geek Squad
Love tech support? Hate tech support? Are tech support? Either way you've gotta love what these guys did. They pranked Best Buys Geek Squad with some erm..."interesting"...problems. I've got all of these saved to my harddrive for later reference. Techies and non-techies alike will laugh at at least some of these. The most hilarious part? The Geek Squads response...never EVER outsource your tech support cause these people don't know a thing! (It's my suggestion that you do as it suggests to digg users and listen to Fan Won't Work first...it may be the longest but it's probably the greatest!)

  • Free Music, Tender
If you want a full ablum free your most likely going to pirate it aren't you? Well here is a band with an idea, they offer their first portion of the ablum (first ten songs) online for free and they hope that the people will like it and order the full version which also includes some added bonus' (stickers, pin-ups etc.) I hope more bands will do this. If only for the free LEGAL tunes...Ok just for the fact that it's free legal tunes. Get the portion here. Edit: Another band, this time a Dutch punk band (they sing in english) has their ablum up.

  • Messing Myspace
Ok, now this is quality humour. A guy decided he wanted more friends on the popular social site MySpace and so he delved into the source code and messed with some programming to make him, well, popular. Read the story here. DEFINATELY a good read.

  • Life's Broken
Ever feel like the world is broken? Well it is. This site is fully powered by its users that show pictures of things that are "broken" in from life. You can find a full host of images in its database. It's a good site for a small chuckle. Check it.

  • Life's A Game
Yes, another portion started by stating what life really is. Moving on, this site shows a group of people who act out parts of video games. From playing tetris and tring to fit into anything to being Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid and sneak into the back of a restaurant...and getting chased out by a cook with a butchers knife. These guys have it all. Lots of video for your viewing pleasure.

And so ends this great big post from me...I hope you enjoy my musing and ramblings of things that I find as I splah around the net...And now? The Fast and the Furious 3....This flash cartoon sums it up nicely and simply I say.

Pension Soda

Alright, it's just going to be once a week from now on out unless something odd and crazy happening...so with out further blither-blather here we go...

  • More Mech!
Alright, if you don't remember my VERY first post check it out and read the heading "A Real Mech" ... Alright done? Awesome hey? Anyways it seems we've got another mech. This one comes from Japan. Unfortuanatly it doesn't look like the company is trying to go as far as Neogentronyx is but it still looks/seems awesome nonetheless. The guns that you see apparantly shoot squishy balls and the legs "roll" on wheels. Bleh, the rolling doesn't seem to appealing but I like the squishy balls as a non-lethal way to attack your enemy. Check out a video of it here... even though it's two and a half minutes long it seems to drag on...(It needs sound) Check it all out though.

  • DARPA Grand Challenge Winner
Alright so if you don't know what the DARPA Grand Challenge is you will by the end of this post. It's a robot car race event where the cars are, as you may have guessed robots. The second year for this event just finished and we actually have a winner! If you don't know why having a winner is so great, it's not the $2 Million purse or the coolness of having robot cars win stuff on their own...it's the fact that last year there was no winner. The winner this year was the Stanford Racing Teams Volkswagon Touerag R5. Check out everything about the event here.

  • Invade! Invade! Invade!
Now we all know that we secretly desire to pull mass zombie invasion upon the city in which we live. Now, make it a reality with this flash applet. You can totally customize your invasion by allowing or not allowing guns, controlling the number of soldiers, allowing or not allowing your zombies to be able to break through walls with a number of other things...check out versions 2 and 3.

  • Free Games!
Check it out. A bunch of companies got together and decided that since their games aren't selling in the bargain bins they'd just put their games up on the net. It's all legal and safe and it has the likes of GTA 1 & 2, the Marathon series and Quake 1-3. For a complete list of downloads check it out here.
  • Ha-uge TV!
What can I say? It's huge! I SOO want it! I just don't want to be the poor fan who has to sit right in front of it and want's to see the instant replay. Hate to crane my neck to see it...Ouch!

Do you know what I'd do instead of putting money away for my pension? I'd buy soda, why? Cause sodas tasty!

Suffer Of Nothing

Alright...shoot me...school kicked in to full gear and with other extra-curricular activities a blog post a day is in no way going to be happening. I'd be happy with once a week if I can get that through...Since it's been over two weeks I've got lots of stuff here...be happy!

  • 3D Modelling App? Free?
Now THIS is uncommon...you can get one of those high-end, shmancy-fancy 3D modelling apps completely free. Just sign-up for free to become a Bronze level member. Then you'll get your code via email. Download the app and start it up, install and your golden (well bronze until you update your membership, which you don't need to) I've been using this for about a week no and the only limitations that I've found is that when going into any layers above the wire-frame layer you get the Alias logo overlayed on top of the image (as you can see to the right, that's a really simple creation I did in like 20 minutes or so) It is pretty sweet to fool around with and even make animations. It's pretty demanding on resources so make sure your computer isn't from 1998 or something ok?

  • Your Music Preference, And More.
This site here is just plain awesome. You put in a band name or a song name and then it searches throughout it's database. Then it plays one song by the band you named or it plays the song you named. Once it plays through that (or you click next) it brings up a new song that it thinks you might like or is similar in still to the artist or song you named. Best of all? It transcends genres, so it doesn't just play from the same genre. Your first 10 hours are free...then you have to subscribe and pay...Still wicked though.

  • Cheap Technology For All!
Here is an article running on BBC about a sub-$100 laptop for developing nations and school students. Personally I think this is great...It's got a rubber coating and a whole load of other things to keep it durable and solid. Getting technology to as many people as possible is always a great thing. You can't honestly deny it...Can you?

  • Humor Break!
Alright a little break from the tech for...tech humor! Well mostly. First off, make sure you check out the Ten Commandments of Tech. Then head on over to New Grounds to watch Super Mario Reloaded (Mario/Matrix Spoof) in 16 Bit! Then if you really haven't had enough, go on over to Daring Fireball to read about Dells new DJ Ditty. Want to find out some more humour sites or the main links to those sites? Well, this link might help you. Enjoy!

  • Crazy Concepts!?!
Just...Wow...I am totally speachless..I mean look at the thing does that not look totally awesome? It's called the Toyota I-Unit. You can control it slowly while in the upright position...Then move at fast speeds by moving into a lower/horizontal position...I doubt it will ever become a full-fledged real consumer product but still...wow. And then there's this car...it seems to have potential but I'm not to keen on an egg car. Check all of those links out though!

  • More Microsoft
Remember that one post where I contrasted Windows Vista's new "Gadgets"? If not here is the link... Well it turned out I was right...Possibly amazing I know. What makes me so sure? Well, considering Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer admitted it I'd say I'm in the clear. Just read the last question and answer in the interview I linked above...

  • Apple Spoofs!
Well it seems every Mac Geek in the known world is linking this iPod Nano spoof...If you haven't seen the iPod Nano commercials yet you might not get it but it is humourous non-the-less. And this video gives a humourous portrayal of how not to act with an iPod. Check it.

  • Video Game Geeks On The Big Screen.
Well, well, well....It seems there is a movie coming that's all about the life of a Video Game Tester...here's the trailer...It looks....uhm? Interesting? Check it out for yourselves, it looks very stereotypical to me...

And so ends the suffering of nothing by this one post that is double the size of a regular post. I hope to have a couple of posts for this upcoming week but we'll see how it goes.

Easy Memo

Onward my lieges...

  • You Have Got To Be Kidding Me...
We are doomed...well possibly. According to this article there is a 'Chaos Cloud' of sorts that destroys anything in it's path. Well actually distorts and twists and jumbles all matter so either way you look at it you get the same answer. While you should always take the "OMGZ WE'RE GONNA DIEZ!" theries with a grain of salt it really does make you think. But I'd take more then a grain with this story, just because if you look to the left of it you see it's found under Entertainment News & Gossip. I mean, come on, Entertainment? The end of the world is entertainment? I guess the world won't end this way after-all.

  • Hungry?
Well if you are, don't get drunk and decide to eat your Cellphones Memory so that people can't "Steal your information." cause guess what buddy? Now you can't get your own information unless you think it will come to your brain magically. I just don't want to know how that'll go through the intestines and then out the other end...Or even if it does...Crazy people and their alchohol....

  • Big Future Ideas
This site tells about the finalists to the innovative contest: 2005 Next Generation Design Competition. Some of these ideas are mediocre while as others are really crazy awesome. I really do suggest you atleast check over lightly some of the finalists ideas. It would be nice to see alot of these in action...Check it out.

  • Oddness In Vision Roundup
Here are a couple of odd videos on the web, the first, an odd/just plain wierd video from Conan O' Brian and the Second a parody of the old NES Mario...with a HUGE mario. Check them out...but their wierd. Don't say I didn't warn you.

  • Almost Forgot...
If you've been having an itching for an intricate little mouse or even if you don't want one at all. These are beautiful in a category of their own. Check it.

You know what would be really easy to write? A memo to your boss with one word. I would entitle it "The".

Metal Moss

So sorry to all of those who read my blog (yes I'm talking to you bots aswell) It's just that schoolwork and school have been CrAzY lately, hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come, I'll try to post as many times a week as possible, we'll have to see though....

  • Wow. Nintendo Has Guts.
The Nintendo Revolution's controller was FINALLY released to the public and just plain wow. It already has skins and other mock ups and it has only been a few days since the announcement. This is by far the most innovative controller I have ever seen for a console system. I just can't wait to seen what type of add-ons Nintendo AND third-party developers will come up with, because as you can see there is a port on the bottom of the controller for them (Joystick etc.). Now I don't only want the Revolution for the downloadable content, but also for the controller too! Check out the english version of the Keynote here, they get to a video on the controller at 28:50.

  • Future Feeder Shows The Future Innovation
This site, called FutureFeeder has a crazy amount different, innovative ideas, albeit it is a just a blog per say it has some awesome stuff. It seems to be updated more then daily. Just reading the titles from the past few posts we get; Rational Trigonometry to Universal Geometry, InVision Guide to a Healthy Heart, Realtime Mobile Landscape and so on and so forth. I'm going to be keeping my eye on this one...

  • Windows Vista Loving...
Well, I wouldn't really call it "loving" but you know...First off, there is supposed to be seven different versions of the newest OS (slated for late '06). To me that is just crazy, I know people that still get confused between Home and Proffessional, nevermind "Ultimate", "Premium" and "Enterprise" editions....Crazy...Second off, I'm sure you know about Apple OSX's Widgets, if not, go get edumacated! Well, it seems that Microsoft just HAD to jump on the band wagon and do the same exact thing! Well, except they call it Gadgets....Gadgets? Widgets? That is three letters...wow, can't say it will be a bad addition to Vista it's just that it seems like such a "Copycat" move...

  • A Days Funny
If you guys/girls remember the iTunes 5 release I talked about last week this is a hilarious story to go along with it. Just for backround before you read it here we go, Apple's iTunes originally started out with an aqua colored interface (borders etc.) Then came Brushed Metal (who plays the key role in this story) and until just recently Brushed Metal ruled the interface. With iTunes 5 there is a brand new silvery steal color. Now without further adue here is the link. If it doesn't seem funny to you then maybe.......maybe.....maybe your crazy. Or you just aren't in a humorous mood or you don't have a sense of humour or...[/blah blah blah]

If moss was strong like metal, would it be edible? And if it was edible, would you turn into the Metal Man or Metal Women superhero of tomorrow?

Cutskies

Alright I was pretty busy yesterday so you don't get a full post...Sorry!

  • NES On The Web!
Have that itch for the oldy games? You can play Duck Hunt or play Super Mario Brothers. Super Mario Brothers is in Japanese, to get in to play click on the Green Button, then the Blue Button, and then the top right Red Button. From there control your character using the Arrow Keys and the shift or space to jump. Pick a tube and launch into the Mario World. Duck Hunt is pretty self explanatory...

  • The iPhone
The iPhone is apparently SUPPOSED to be not that great. Although I can't say for myself it is certainly what many are saying, search around, you'll find it. This article tells what Jobs may really be up to...We'll have to wait and see...

  • The Lazy Get Lazier
This gadget lets you use hand motions from your seat to change channels on the TV, as well as fast forward and rewind in movies, exact hand gestures are still getting worked out for other features though, it looks neat.

In other odd and half-significant news "Bush took full responsibility of federal hurricane faluires" and NerdTV Episode 2 was released, but you have to do some fooling around with the URL to get to it as they haven't updated the site yet...

Until later days...You guys got cutskies on a lengthy post (Cutskies = Screwed over) Have a nice day!
